Men's lacrosse pulls off a senior night win on Friday

\0x200BThe Richmond men's lacrosse team beat previously undefeated Liberty University 13-10 on the team's senior night at the Robins Stadium on Friday night.

\0x200BLiberty started the game with the first four face-off wins to set up attacker Kurt Tobias' goal 2 minutes and 3 seconds into the game. Tobias added another with a shot from 10 yards out to give Liberty an early 2-goal lead.

\0x200BRichmond midfielders Jon Magnusson and Kevin McNamara scored two goals each, starting a 7-1 goal run to close out the half and give the Spiders a lead they held for the rest of the game.

Coach Dan Chemotti thought the team responded well after a poor defensive start to give Liberty its first loss of the season.

"I don't think we executed exactly what we were trying to do defensively at the beginning of the game," Chemotti said. "But after that, I thought our guys did a really good job, and I think that significantly contributed to shutting them out in the second quarter."

Sophomore Nate Volpert, attacker and team leader in goals coming into this game, scored his first of 3 goals just 22 seconds into the second half to extend the Spider lead to 4 goals. Volpert also had two assists in the game, bringing his point total to 43 this season (31 goals, 12 assists).

"Tonight, I just think we did a great job of doing what we've been coached to do," Volpert said. "We executed all six men on the field at the same time. Defense played great. Goalie played great, and we transitioned it to the offense well."

Senior goalie Brendan Cole had 11 saves against Liberty's 41 total shots to seal Richmond's senior night win.

Cole was happy about the senior night win, he said. "It was great to have my parents here, and to really get a good game under our belts and go into the week having a win," he said.

The Spiders' next game is April 17 at home against the Richmond Lacrosse Club, before closing out the regular season against Tennessee on April 21 in Knoxville, Tenn. The Tennessee game will be a conference match and gives the Spiders a chance to clinch a bid for the Southern Eastern Lacrosse Conference tournament in Atlanta.

\0x200B"If we win [the Tennessee game], I think we control our own destiny to go to our conference tournament," Chemotti said. "The good thing is we still control our fate, and I wouldn't have it any other way right now."
