Rapid Recap: Richmond 73 - Dayton 64

Final Score: Richmond 73 - Dayton 64

What Happened: I thought Richmond would need Cedrick Lindsay to shoot well to beat a strong Dayton team that has wins over Gonzaga and California. I was wrong. Richmond closed the game on a 10-1 run to beat Dayton, 73-64. Much of Richmond's offense came from the free-throw line, where the Spiders went 32-35. Despite combining to shoot 6-24 from the field, Lindsay and Kendall Anthony, who combined to go 22-25 on foul shots, finished with 17 and 18 points, respectively. Alonzo Nelson-Ododa, who had 11 points and seven rebounds, anchored Richmond's defense. Richmond, which trailed 34-30 at halftime, was lucky to only be down by four, given it shot 30 percent from the field. Dayton, conversely, shot 61 percent. Lindsay and Anthony shot a combined 1-12 from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Spiders went 13-14 on its foul shots, which kept the score close. Richmond tied the game at 43 for the first time since the game was tied at seven early in the second half. Dayton, which faced serious foul trouble throughout the second half, was able to regain the lead, but Lindsay's first made field goal and a 3-pointer from ShawnDre Jones put the Spiders up, 54-50, with under 10 minutes remaining. The Spiders and Flyers traded leads during the next few minutes. With Richmond up 65-63 with under three minutes to play, Nelson-Ododa brought the fans to their feet with a monster block. Trey Davis, who had six points and seven rebounds, made a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession, which increased UR's lead to 67-63. Richmond made its free throws at the end, as it had done all day, to seal the victory.

Spider Positives: Talk about an impressive day from the foul line. Richmond did well both getting to the line and making the shots. Both coaches credited Anthony and Lindsay's aggressive driving for being a reason why the Spiders shot so many foul shots. When you shoot 32-35 from the line, you put yourself in a good position to win. Coach Mooney said before the season that Richmond's depth would be one of the team's strengths. The Spiders showed their depth tonight, as its two leading scorers had tough shooting nights. Richmond rebounded well against a big, athletic Flyers team. Dayton out-rebounded Richmond 30-29, but the Spiders had 12 offensive rebounds to Dayton's seven.

Spider Negatives: Richmond's offense looked bad tonight, especially in the first half. The offense looked flat and uncreative, which led to Richmond shooting 30 percent from the field in the first half. Richmond improved in the second half, shooting 10-22 from the field, but the offense still did not look great. Richmond relied on excellent foul shooting to get the win, and the Spiders cannot count on making 32 free throws in coming games.

Up Next: Richmond hosts No. 16 UMASS on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
