Women's soccer sweeps weekend games

University of Richmond's women’s soccer used a true team effort to defeat Old Dominion on Sunday, as three different Spiders scored a goal and five more players had an assist.

The victory Sunday finished off an undefeated weekend at home for the Spiders, who also won against Princeton on Friday.

The Spiders proved their versatility against ODU. They scored three goals in unique ways, and seven players made either a goal or an assist.

First-year midfielder Olivia Aha netted the game-winning goal for Richmond with a powerful kick from 21 yards away. The ball struck the top-right corner of the goal and bounced off of the goalkeeper’s back into the net.

“Sometimes you just try to put it in the right spot, and with soccer, a little bit of luck goes a long way,” Aha said. The shot was placed perfectly, regardless of whether it was because of luck or skill, and came when the Spiders needed it the most.

Lindsey Egbers’ goal earlier in the game capped off an impressive display of teamwork from Richmond. Junior back Darian Podmajersky delivered a high-arching assist from the corner that sailed over the goalkeeper’s head, off of Egbers’ foot and into the net. Egbers gave praise to Podmajersky for the assist, and said she was excited to score her first collegiate goal.

Despite allowing Old Dominion to battle back from a two-goal deficit, which frustrated head coach Peter Albright, the Spiders showed resilience by scoring the game winner.

“I thought our temperament changed,” Albright said. He said he saw resolve from his team, who he had thought controlled the game after allowing ODU to come back and tie the score.

The Spiders showed this weekend that they have multiple players who can make big plays and score goals. On Friday, junior midfielder Ashley Riefner scored all three Richmond goals to lead the team to a win.

Richmond’s ability to score from all over the field with a variety of players should bode well for the team for the rest of the season. The Spiders are at home for three of their next four games, and are now 2-0 at home and 5-4 overall this season following the win Sunday.
