Athlete of the week: field hockey’s Rebecca Barry

Jersey Number: 10

Height: 5’9"

Year: Senior

Hometown: Limerick, Ireland

High School: Laurel Hill Colaiste FCJ

This past weekend against the Saint Louis Billikens, Rebecca Barry led the Spiders with four goals while taking 11 shots, seven of which were on target. For her efforts, Barry was selected as the Atlantic 10 field hockey player of the week. Barry has scored 52 goals overall, the fourth most goals ever made by a Richmond field hockey player.

How did you start playing field hockey?

“I started playing because my mom and grandma both did. My aunt was also coaching a team near me, so my cousin and I both just started playing when we were about seven. I’ve been playing ever since.”

What’s been your best game since you’ve started playing?

“I played on the Irish Under-18 national team. We played against Belgium in 2011, and we beat them even though they were a team that trained a whole lot more than we did. “

Do you have any pregame rituals?

“No, I just try to stay as relaxed as I can. Sometimes there’s singing and dancing in the locker room, and I feed off of that.”

Who’s the best dancer on the team?

“That’s a tough one. I’d say Caroline McCabe. It’s hard to explain her moves, you’d have to see them to appreciate them.”

Who is the funniest person on the team?

“I suppose Helen Warner. She can always make me laugh.”

Is there anything you’re afraid of?

“Regret, to a certain extent. I don’t ever want to look back and think, ‘Oh, I should’ve done that.’ That’s one of the main reasons why I am here.”

Do you have any role models?

“My mom and my grandma, just because of how strong they are and all that they do for their families and people around them. I definitely look up to them and there are things about their character that I would love to have in my character.“

What did you do over Fall Break?

“I was here. We had practice and two games last week.”

Is there anything about your game you wish you could improve?

“I just think I should put less pressure on myself. I expect a lot from myself, which I like, but sometimes it can be a little too much.”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

“From the start of the season our goal has been to win the Atlantic 10 Conference. I don’t think much about what happens after that.”
