Rapid recap: Richmond defeats William & Mary, retains Capitol Cup

The Richmond Spiders won the Capitol Cup against William & Mary to finish the season 8-4 and most likely advance to the playoffs. The team returned to top form Saturday night, as quarterback Michael Strauss looked healthy and the Spiders fired on all cylinders. Seth Fisher ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns, and the defense held the Tribe in check for the most part. Tre McBride did what he could for the Tribe, catching eight passes for 134 yards.

The offense was multi-faceted and featured big plays from most of its usual playmakers. Brian Brown, Reggie Diggs and Rashad Ponder all had more than 50 receiving yards, and Diggs caught two touchdowns. Strauss looked as comfortable as he has all season, and Fisher plowed through the defense, especially in the second half. Strauss was awarded MVP after throwing for 291 yards and two touchdowns.

The defense showed up against William & Mary for the first time in weeks. The team had a bend-but-not-break approach, holding the Tribe to 20 points and 320 yards of offense. The defense was more of a complement to the offense than anything.

The Spiders will find out tomorrow whether they will make the playoffs.
