Football’s offensive coordinator accepts job at Clemson

The guru behind Richmond football’s nationally ranked offense the past three years has accepted a job coaching quarterbacks at Clemson University, according to an email sent to players by Carl Kotz, director of football operations.

Brandon Streeter, who began calling plays for the Spiders in 2012, has been the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under head coach Danny Rocco. Streeter will be returning to Clemson, where he started as quarterback for two years and later served as a graduate assistant.

Streeter’s spread offense helped the Spiders break every single game, season and career passing record in Richmond’s history, according to richmondspiders.com. The Spiders have averaged at least 28 points per game in each of Streeter’s three seasons.

The complex offense that Streeter runs has allowed many Spider players to earn recognition. In the past two years, three players have earned First-Team All-Conference honors under his lead: receiver Ben Edwards, center Austin Gund (twice) and halfback Seth Fisher. Quarterback Michael Strauss earned Third-Team honors in 2013 and 2014.

Kyle Lauletta, a second-year quarterback, will be affected heavily by Streeter’s departure. Many of his teammates have said they confidently believed Lauletta would be the starting quarterback in 2015, but he will have to learn a new offense first.

Streeter has taught the young quarterback things that will help him regardless of the new offensive style, though, Lauletta said. “I have learned so much about how to go through progressions and reads and also how to read defenses,” he said. “He has been very helpful, more so mentally than physically.”

Finding someone new to run Richmond’s offense will be an unusual task for Rocco. Before joining Rocco at Richmond in 2012, Streeter coached under him at Liberty for six seasons. The two coaches have worked together for nearly a decade.

“He was primarily responsible for our offensive production and firepower [at Liberty],” Rocco told richmondpsiders.com. “He is a well-respected coach with a bright future.”

According to an article from SB Nation, the announcement will become official following background checks and completion of a final deal. The article stated the announcement should be made within a week.

Information regarding Streeter’s replacement at Richmond will be provided when it becomes available.
