A Semester in Review: Sorority philanthropy events

Spring semester at the University of Richmond brings a lot of things: a fresh academic schedule, a beautifully blooming campus and, of course, the prospect of summer break on the horizon. The semester is wrapping up shortly, and it’s time to highlight some outstanding organizations that make all of the spring philanthropy events happen. This semester, several sororities were able to bring the campus community together while supporting their philanthropies.

Delta Gamma

It was a warm evening when dozens of UR students gathered in the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness to take part in Delta Gamma’s paradise-themed Spike for Sight event. The university’s Delta Gamma chapter donated all proceeds from this volleyball tournament to the Delta Gamma Foundation, Service for Sight. Service for Sight is at the heart of Delta Gamma’s philanthropic mission, and works to promote sight preservation and assist children and adults who are blind or visually impaired. This year, Delta Gamma hit a fundraising record and was able to surpass its goal of $5,000. Kappa Alpha Theta won first place for the second year in a row, and the men’s club volleyball team also took home a first place title.

Kappa Alpha Theta

Kappa Alpha Theta quite literally crossed the finish line of reaching its goal when it held Rock the Casa, its annual spring philanthropy event. Rock the Casa supports Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), an organization that supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy to provide safety for abused and neglected children in the United States. The 5K was held on March 25 at the Westhampton Green, and the student body put its best foot forward to show its support and, of course, a little competition. Kappa Alpha Theta was proud to announce after the event was over that it had raised $17,050 for Henrico’s CASA foundation.

Kappa Delta

Kappa Delta recently hosted one its most highly anticipated events of the year: Wing Fling. Dozens of UR students gathered on a beautiful April afternoon in the Web to support the Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) foundation, as well as Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA). Students enjoyed endless wings, participated in raffle contests and competed in the wing-eating contest. The chapter raised $5,662 to donate to these philanthropies, and is looking forward to hosting this again next year.

Kappa Kappa Gamma

Kappa Kappa Gamma held its first ever Kappa Karaoke just a few weeks ago. Students showed their support and were excited for the chance to win tickets to a Chainsmokers concert during the event. Pizza was served, and students showed off their hidden karaoke talent throughout the night. Overall, the chapter was thoroughly pleased with its efforts and ended the night raising over $1,500 for its national philanthropy, Reading is Fundamental (RIF), an organization that encourages and motivates young children to read.

Pi Beta Phi

Pi Beta Phi brought out the competitive nature of UR students at its annual philanthropy event. Sororities, fraternities and non-affiliated students created teams of four to compete in a basketball tournament for the first-place title. The event was to raise money for Pi Beta Phi’s national philanthropy event Read > Lead > Achieve. Read > Lead > Achieve inspires a lifelong love of reading with the hope of creating a more literate and productive society.

Delta Delta Delta 

Tri Delta held its annual Delta Dodgeball event and raised over $1,000 for St. Jude's Hospital. The event was very successful, with many on-campus organizations that attended and participated, keeping the tournament competitive and exciting. Tri Delta said it was so appreciative of those who had come out to play, cheer and support the families and patients of St. Jude's. A great spring semester all around for philanthropy!
