Sophomore starting guard De’Monte Buckingham was dismissed on Wednesday from the men's basketball team for a violation of athletic department policies.

The University of Richmond men’s basketball team dismissed sophomore starting guard De’Monte Buckingham from the team on Wednesday for a violation of athletic department policies, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Buckingham had established himself as one the Spiders' top performers over the last two years, ranking first in rebounds, second in assists and third in points this past season. In his freshman season, he won the Atlantic10 Rookie of the Year award.

"I want to thank De'Monte for his contributions to our program over the last two years,” Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said in a statement. “We wish him well in the future."

Buckingham was not available for comment. A representative from the athletic department declined to comment on what his specific violation was.

Buckingham is the third Spider basketball player to leave the team in the last three months. Redshirt junior Khwan Fore was granted release from the team on April 3 in order to explore other career opportunities, and redshirt junior Solly Stansbury left the team in January to pursue a career in France.
