Spider Sports Recap: Weeks of 4/29 and 5/6

The Spider Sports Recap is a weekly update, covering the latest results of every University of Richmond sports team.


Men's Lacrosse

May 3: Win 16-8 vs. Furman University

With hat tricks from Ryan Lee, Teddy Hatfield and Ryan Lanchbury, the Spiders defeated Furman to advance to the Southern Conference championship game on Saturday, May 5.

May 5: Win 11-10 vs. Jacksonville University

Richmond won its first Southern Conference championship in an overtime thriller. Hatfield scored the winning and only goal in overtime to secure the victory. The team advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second time in Richmond’s history. 

May 12: Loss 18-9 at Albany

The Spiders lost to the second-seeded Albany in the first round and struggled to gain momentum throughout the contest. The team finished the season with a record of 11-6.

Women's Lacrosse

May 4: Win 19-12 vs. Saint Joseph’s University

Junior Marissa Brown scored five goals and senior Kim Egizi scored four as the Spiders advanced to the conference championship game.

May 6: Win 12-11 vs. University of Massachusetts

In their overtime victory, the Spiders won the Atlantic 10 conference championship for the fourth time in school history. Egizi, who had another four-goal performance, made the winning goal in overtime. The team advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007.

May 11: Loss 24-18 vs. Northwestern

The Spiders lost to ninth-seeded Northwestern in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Junior Katie Sciandra scored seven goals in the effort. The team finished the season with a record of 16-4, tied for the best in school history.

Baseball

May 4: Win 4-2 at Virginia Commonwealth University

The Spiders won in 13 innings. Redshirt junior D.J. Lee had an RBI bunt single to break the tie in the 13th inning. Redshirt freshman Tim Miller started the game and threw 5.1 scoreless innings. Juniors Layne Looney and Dalton Light each pitched three scoreless innings in relief.

May 5: Loss 1-3 at VCU

Richmond pitchers held the Rams to just three total hits, but the offense failed to stage a comeback.

May 6: Win 3-0 at VCU

The Spiders won the rubber game of the three-game weekend series against their city rivals. Redshirt senior Robbie Baker pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out seven and allowing only two hits.

May 8: Loss 6-2 at North Carolina

While the Spiders had the lead through five innings, two-run rallies in the sixth and seventh innings secured the North Carolina victory.

May 9: Win 3-2 at Longwood

Richmond starting pitcher and freshman Collin Lowe threw six scoreless innings and struck out eight in a tight contest.

May 11: Win 13-6 vs. La Salle 

Home runs from Spiders Kyle Adams, Daniel Brumbaugh, Anthony Forte and Jordan Schulefand powered the win over La Salle. Each of Richmond's starting position players had at least one hit and scored at least one run in the team effort.

May 12: Win 8-6 vs. La Salle 

The Spiders took an early 6-0 lead with home runs from Adams and Vinny Capra and held off a late La Salle comeback attempt to win.

May 13: Win 6-1 vs. La Salle

Richmond completed a series sweep of its conference rival, led by Baker who struck out 10  and gave up zero earned runs in nine innings pitched.

Women's Track

May 5-6: A-10 Outdoor Championship, Fairfax, Virginia

The Richmond 4-x-800-meter relay team, comprising Maria Acosta, Marisa Ruskan, Haley Preschutti and Brooke Fazio, won its event for the second consecutive season. Caroline Robelen and Preschutti finished first and second in the 1,500-meter final race.

May 12-13: ECAC Championships, Princeton, New Jersey

Fazio finished third in 800m race and Ruskan finished fourth in the 1500m. The 4x400m relay team of Fazio, Acosta, Marshea Robinson and Haley Berkeley finished fifth in the event. 

Women's Golf

May 7-9: NCAA Tallahassee Regional

The team's score was 297 (+9), the lowest in NCAA Regional score in school history, but it failed to advance to the next round. Junior Annie Collom finished 59th overall led all Spiders with an overall three-day score of 225 (+9).
