Spider Sports Recap: Week of April 8

Women’s Golf

April 8-9: Hoya Women’s Invitational, Beallsville, Maryland

The Spiders finished in fourth place with a score of +53, 11 shots back of winner Georgetown University. Senior Annie Collom ended in third place at +4 in what may be the penultimate tournament of her college career. The team will host the Patriot League Championship on April 20-21.

Baseball

April 9: Loss 0-4 at Liberty University

First-year outfielder Johnny Hipsman went 3-for-4, but the Spiders could manage only one other hit against stout Liberty pitching. First-year pitcher Jacob Marcus started and allowed one run over four innings for the Spiders.

April 12: Win 17-5 at Dayton University

The Spiders used a 13-run fifth inning to defeat Dayton in an Atlantic-10 matchup. Sophomore Jordan Schulefand had four hits and Tyler Plantier had three to support redshirt sophomore starter Tim Miller, who allowed two runs over six innings.

April 13: Loss 7-8, Win 11-3 at Dayton University

The team split Saturday’s doubleheader against the Flyers to take the series. Plantier and senior Sage Bruhl had a combined seven hits each on the day. The Spiders lost the first game of the day on an 11th inning walk-off single. Dayton took an early 2-0 lead in the second game, but the Spiders roared back and maintained control the rest of the game.

April 12-13: Stitch Intercollegiate, Cary, North Carolina

The Spiders finished in 12th place in a 14-team field with a team score of +22. The tournament ended after 36 holes because of thunderstorms. Junior Andrew Sciarretta had the team’s best individual performance at +4, finishing in 46th place. The team will next compete at the Atlantic 10 Championship on April 26.

Women’s Lacrosse

April 12: Win 18-11 vs. Davidson University

Redshirt sophomore Sam Geiersbach had five goals and two assists to help the Spiders overcome an early deficit. The Spiders outscored the Wildcats 10-4 in the second half.

April 14: Loss 12-13 at the University of Massachusetts

UMass defeated the Spiders in an overtime thriller. Senior Katie Sciandra scored six goals for the Spiders and junior goalkeeper Megan Gianforte had 14 saves, but the Minutewomen scored quickly in overtime to win the game.

Women’s Track

April 13: George Mason Spring Invitational, Fairfax, Virginia

First-year Rachel Helbling won the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.19 seconds. Helbling also finished in fourth place in the 200-meter dash. First-year Johanna Lupica missed out on first place in the 5000-meter run by just over three seconds, and finished in second. First-year Kayla Woods won the long jump by a wide margin, leaping 5.90 meters.

Men’s Tennis

April 13: Win 7-0 at Howard University

The Spiders did not drop a single set in sweeping Howard. First-year John Walsh won 6-0, 6-0 in his singles match. 

April 14: Win 5-2 at Georgetown University

The Spiders lost first and second singles matches to the Hoyas, but won the rest of the slate to move to 4-1 in A-10 play. Walsh and junior George Lovitt won their doubles match, and then each won singles matches for the Spiders.

Men’s Lacrosse

April 13: Loss 7-14 at Air Force

Sophomore Ryan Lanchbury scored three goals to extend his single-season scoring record to 39, but the Spiders lost to a tough Falcons team. The loss moved the Spiders into a three-way tie for the conference lead with Air Force and High Point University.
