The University of Richmond women’s lacrosse team started the spring break off right with a 12-4 home victory over Coastal Carolina University Friday.

The game marked the team’s fifth straight win. The Spiders came into the matchup against the Chanticleers with a perfect four to nothing record and were ready to add another win.

UR started off strong with a win over the draw control and a foul by CCU. The Spiders played zonal defense, keeping the Chanticleers at bay, but CCU was able to find an opening and tallied its first goal at 10:48 in the first quarter. They scored their second goal at 9:34 and secured a 2-0 lead.

The Spiders found their groove at 6:26 with a goal by graduate attacker Nicole Concannon with a free position shot, marking her ninth goal of the season.

After UR won the draw control, junior midfielder Sophia DiCenso dug her cleats into the turf as she charged the CCU defense and tied the game 2-2 at 6:05.

UR took the lead at 1:59 after Concannon found a gap and rushed the goal to score her second tally of the game. The first period ended with UR up 3-2.

With 11:13 on the clock in the second period, freshman attacker Colleen Quinn tallied her first goal of the game. But with back-to-back fouls by UR, the Chanticleers set up for a free position shot and scored a goal of their own.

At 5:19, CCU tied the game 4-4 with a clear shot through UR’s defense. A false start by CCU gave UR possession and allowed DiCenso to score a close-quarters goal that broke the tie.

The first half ended with UR up 5-4 against. The Spiders had 11 shots on goal and graduate goalie Delaney Galvin sat at six saves.

About eight minutes into the third period, junior midfielder Lindsey Frank broke UR’s dry-streak and tallied the only third period goal for both teams.

The Spiders’ luck was against them as they had five back-to-back free position shots in under a minute resulting in no goals and UR fighting for an open shot.

The game entered the last period with UR leading 6-4. The Spiders were only 15 minutes away from securing their fifth win.

CCU was first to gain possession and make their way to UR’s goal, but a missed shot left the Spiders in control. Possession would switch back and forth until 11:51 when Frank leaped off the turf for her second goal of the game.

A minute and some change later, Quinn followed Frank with a goal of her own. At 6:10, Quinn tallied her third goal of the game and brought the score to 9-4 against the Chanticleers.

About two minutes after Quinn’s goal, Frank found an opening in CCU’s defense and shot a rocket into the net, extending UR’s lead to 10-4. Junior attacker Arden Tierney assisted in UR’s seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th goals.

The Spiders were on fire in the final minutes of the game as Frank tallied her fourth goal at 2:56. At 1:47, Tierney scored her first goal of the game and brought UR’s winning lead to 12-4.
