Breaking News: Collision with a utility pole on River Rd. causes power outages across UR campus

The University of Richmond had a power outage across campus at 9:52 a.m. on Jan. 26 after a traffic collision on River Road brought down a utility pole. 

Power has been restored to all buildings on campus, according to an email from the University of Richmond Police Department at 11:42 a.m. As of 11:21 a.m. the 8100 block of River Road remains closed. Beyond Northridge Road, the power was out and Ralston Road was blocked off. The collision happened between Northridge and Ralston on River Road. 

Henrico County Police were on the scene as of 11:22 a.m.

UR Police, in an email obtained by The Collegian, stated that the following buildings were without power as of 10:48 a.m: Richmond Hall, Maryland Hall, Fountain Hall, Humanities Building, Jepson School of Leadership Studies, the UR Law School, E. Claiborne Robins Stadium, The Weinstein Center, Robins Hall, Dennis Hall, Marsh Hall, Moore Hall, Residence Hall no. 1, Lakeview Hall and the Heilman Dining Center. 

The Heilman Dining Center and Tyler’s Grill will remain open with limited menu options. Handcrafted Deli, Green Seed and Bruce’s and Daily Bite are the current options inside the HDC.

Dining hall employees were grilling outside in high 40-degree temperatures to provide lunch for UR community members, according to an Instagram story from Dining Services. Organic Krush, which is inside the Well-Being Center, was closed as of 10:20 a.m, according to a previous Instagram story from Dining Services. 8:15 at Boatwright, Passport Cafe and Lou’s Cafe remain open.

Dominion Energy, UR's energy provider, was on the scene to bring back the power, according to the URPD update. 

UR Facilities had no control over the power outage as this was an issue only Dominion Energy could resolve, a University Facilities employee said. 

As of 12:02 p.m., there were 151 customers without power, according to the Dominion Energy power outage map. Their estimated time of restoration for those on River Road was 5 p.m.-8 p.m. A crew has been dispatched to fix the outage, according to Dominion Energy’s website.
