Dear Birds and the Bees faithful and casual readers,

It's a beautiful morning in the piazza, and the bus driver's son is dead. He died in a car accident the night before, and the bus driver just found out. As a student in the UGA Studies Abroad program in Italy, I have been living out of suitcases for a week in various Italian cities, and the driver's job today is to take us all to Cortona, our new home. Everyone is solemn as we wait in the park with our hundreds of suitcases, which he will soon help us load onto the bus. Does one go to work on the day one's child dies? In this case, apparently so.

The other day I revealed to my mom the philosophy of my life: my faith in God, love of people and desire for productivity. I think it's a pretty optimistic way to live life, and it's given this semester a sense of adventure. I've heard the saying that life is a dance, but sometimes I look around, and feel like I am stuck playing a game at a sleepover party. Remember the game, "Would You Rather"? It started out as which boy would you rather have to be partners with, or which of two cute teachers would you rather marry? That was back when boys your own age still had cooties, but of course grown up men had gotten rid of their cooties. But I digress.

Attention all students ... this is a special service announcement. I don't really like to invoke regional identity on a regular basis, but today it seems as if I have no choice. OK, so I'm a pretty big fan of my home state and I may be obnoxious about it every once in a while, but this is different. I'm really not offended or spiteful, but after a few incidents I have decided to make this article a priority. The topic of my concern is the often flippant use of the word "barbeque" on our campus. We need to talk. There is a lot of history behind this word that has gradually shaped my life in one way or another, and it has meaning much deeper than is usually acknowledged. In my opinion, the holy grail of Southern cooking has always been barbeque and as the semester nears its completion, I can't stop thinking about it.
