When Humberto Cardounel Sr. fled Cuba in 1961 after Fidel Castro took power, he left most things behind, including his law career, for a new start in the U.S. As he rebuilt his life in Virginia, he began a family with his wife, Lourdes, who was another Cuban immigrant, and he taught Spanish at Richmond.

School is now in session. To those of you who are arriving fresh from states in the North and further South, the city (and outskirts) of Richmond may seem the same as it always does. To those of us who have survived the summer heat, the school year has certainly made its mark in many noticeable ways. Parking lots are fuller, grocery stores are fuller, facilities are open later and most importantly: The Henrico police have retaken their positions at strategically located checkpoints across town.

During the early hours of Oct. 21, Henrico Police cited 35 people for unlawful purchase or possession of alcohol at an off-campus party on Center Ridge Drive, where four Richmond College students live.
