In his Inaugural Address, President Barack Obama asserted that we are asking the wrong questions. Instead of engaging in political debates about the proper size of government, we should do what works. In other words, we should not unquestioningly identify ourselves with ideologies, but should remain open to what public discourse can teach us. In order for this republic to function properly, we must adhere to foundational principles, such as honesty, courage, curiosity and loyalty.

Trudging the length of the frozen Mall from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, a body could acquire a countless bounty of worthless, tacky Obama memorabilia. Step right up and get your T-shirt with Obama's smiling face on it, or maybe one with a dollar bill emblazoned on the front with a picture of Obama, looking pensive, replacing George Washington. And what lady wouldn't want to wear a snazzy pair of Obama earrings, or even secretly sport her Obama panties?

WASHINGTON -- On the eve of Barack Obama's presidential swearing-in, ebullient tourists and inaugural-goers were scattered throughout the National Mall. Some of them claimed spots for the night, hunkering down with sleeping bags and cardboard boxes to shield themselves from gusty winds. The nation's monuments -- iconic symbols of the U.S. democracy -- were lit majestically in the early morning hours before the country would inaugurate its first African-American president.

In early 2006, Westhampton College Dean Juliette Landphair asked her former history professor Edward Ayers to consider applying to be the next president of the University of Richmond. Ayers, content with his position as dean of the College of the Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia, politely declined the offer.
