Hurricane Irene, a Category 1 storm, hit the University of Richmond Saturday afternoon just four days after a magnitude-5.8 earthquake. The storm forced the school to shut down at 2 p.m. and brought down trees and power lines. The school announced Sunday that it would have a normal schedule on Monday.

I'm sweating it out by the pool trying to fix my tan lines when the unthinkable happens -- my cell phone shuts off. My friend is still happily texting away on her iPhone on the towel next to me and simultaneously streaming Kanye and Jay-Z. I jab the power key on my sad little flip phone and force it to reboot. It does, and lights up with a message informing me that my battery has overheated. Then it turns on and off and on for the remainder of the afternoon.

On April 30, 2011, former University of Richmond cornerback Justin Rogers was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. However, on March 11, 2011, the National Football League entered a lockout, disallowing communication between the organizations and the players.

The university's 181st Commencement was held at the Robins Center Sunday. Curtis Carlson, CEO of SRI International and one of the pioneers of HD television, delivered the commencement address and senior Ali Amaral was selected to be the student speaker.

Graduation ceremonies started Friday night with the Senior Celebration and culminated in the traditional Candlelight Ceremony Saturday night. All of the events occurred in preparation for the graduation ceremony which will start at 2 p.m. Sunday.

University of Richmond cornerback Justin Rogers was taken in the seventh round by the Buffalo Bills in the 2011 NFL Draft Saturday. Rogers, who was the 206th overall pick, is the fourth Richmond player to be taken by Buffalo and the first since fellow defensive back Brian Jordan was selected in 1989. The Bills selected two other defensive backs this year in Aaron Brown from the University of Texas in the second round and safety Da'Norris Searcy from the University of North Carolina in the fourth round.

Last weekend my mother told me that our 78-year-old neighbor in Charlotte was dying of a brain tumor. First, I was struck by the dull vacancy of my mind trying to wrap itself around such news. Second, I was struck by the fact that my mother waited several days after finding out herself to tell me. She said she didn't want to upset me, even though she had been feeling down for days.
