In the late summer of 1973, Edward Ayers sat nervously waiting for the chairman of the American studies graduate program at Yale University. Ayers, then 20, had been sure he didn’t belong there. He had shown up unannounced with nothing but a sense that he wanted to be like Tom Wolfe or Richard Marius, and that Yale was apparently the place to be. He looked as though he had spent the past three months living in a car, which he had. He was working for a traveling carnival. His job was to load passengers onto the double Ferris wheel for 12 hours a day. He hadn’t had a haircut in months. A group of Yale boys in blazers told him he looked like Huckleberry Finn. He thought he looked like Neil Young.

Five albums into their punk project dubbed The Goo Goo Dolls, John Rzeznik and Robby Takac broke through. “Name” was their first big hit, and left some fans complaining that they had gone too mainstream. One fan even sent Rzeznik a letter in 1998 that started “Dear F-----,” which, he told Guitar World, was not the first time he’d been called such an awful name.

With the arrival of cold weather, holiday drinks have also arrived at 8:15 at Boatwright in time for the holiday season. The three classic flavors of gingerbread, toasted marshmallow and peppermint have returned for the season, and can be paired with a mocha, Americano or hot chocolate. The special holiday drink added to this season’s roster is the spiced brown sugar chai latte.

The use of brand ambassadors is a recent way many companies interact and communicate with their audience. Brand “reps” provide a more personal and direct way for brands to spread their message and promote their product. Becoming a brand ambassador is a way to earn an additional income and potentially jump-start a future career with a company. Three University of Richmond students shared their experiences as brand ambassadors.
