As many people know, the anti-gay marriage laws DOMA (Defense of Marriage) and Proposition 8 have been up for review in the Supreme Court these past few days. Probably most of us wouldn't know about this if it weren't for the profile picture-changing phenomenon that has swept the country along with it (at least I'm assuming that it has swept the country- my Facebook friends are pretty localized on this coast).

My father grew up on a dairy farm in Ireland, and the intelligence of farm animals has long been a hot topic for him. From informing my siblings and me that pigs bathe in mud to protect their skin from the sun to asserting that cows who are sold onto other farms find their way home to their loved ones, my dad has been convinced for at least as long as I've known him that the level of intelligence among cows and pigs is comparable to that of average human beings. (He even had a small pet pig for a long time - and liked this pig better than any dog he has had since!)

Upon reading the Family Foundation's blog post about their president, Victoria Cobb, receiving the Jepson School of Leadership Studies' 10th Reunion Recognition Award and the resulting student protest, my first instinct was to laugh. It amused me that the Family Foundation — such a supposedly influential, powerful organization — would be so threatened by a group of undergraduate protesters that they chose to insult us rather than to focus on their esteemed leader in their article. That they were unable to correctly spell the word "hypocrisy" was merely icing on the cake.

Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrat Creigh Deeds are in a constantly tightening race for Virginia's governorship, but at the University of Richmond the excitement level seems low - a factor that some think might spell trouble for Deeds as the election approaches.
