Who else besides me reads the writing on the bathroom stalls? There are political rants, inter-fraternity quarrels and usually some reference to a person eating what the toilet leaves behind. While it's probably more often in guys bathrooms (considering most girls I talk to haven't seen any such graffiti) it is always worth taking the time to read. Graffiti in bathroom stalls is some of the most candid dialogue I have ever seen on campus. Whoever writes on the bathroom stall has no fear of punishment and only a few people ever see the message. The scribbles are not always wholesome or thoughtful, but are often indicative of what happens in reality or are at least a reflection of the way many people think about a subject.

It seems like the entire modern world cares deeply about the environment all of the sudden. With the Olympics in Beijing coming to a close and many commercials becoming less prominent it must be pointed out that the green label has infiltrated the media, governments and dinner conversations around the world. Public Warning: Honda Accords may cause a forest to grow, cranes fly through the sky representing GE's fuel-efficient jet engines, GM broadcasts new fuel cell technology and China boasts of solar panels and trees being placed as often as possible in its capital city.

Do Richmond students care about the environment as much as our president does? On Nov. 13, 2007, President Ayers signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Since then, the president announced environmental stewardship to be a priority on campus and has followed this pronouncement with actions: D-Hall's certification as a Virginia Green Restaurant, a commitment to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certificated Silver certified construction projects, the pursuit of a program that would allow SpiderCards to be used on the GRTC public transportation system and the Eco-Spider Challenge to promote sustainability on campus. Although all of these initiatives are excellent steps for our campus to take, are we, the students, paying attention?
