WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States Tuesday here in Washington, where more than 2 million people gathered to watch the first African-American become president. The inaugural parade followed that afternoon down Pennsylvania Avenue.
WASHINGTON -- On the eve of Barack Obama's presidential swearing-in, ebullient tourists and inaugural-goers were scattered throughout the National Mall. Some of them claimed spots for the night, hunkering down with sleeping bags and cardboard boxes to shield themselves from gusty winds. The nation's monuments -- iconic symbols of the U.S. democracy -- were lit majestically in the early morning hours before the country would inaugurate its first African-American president.
