The Center for Civic Engagement and the Office of the Chaplaincy hosted University of Richmond's eighth annual poverty simulation on Oct. 7, attended by more than 50 student participants. During the simulation, students were required to role-play the lives of low-income families by securing food, shelter and other basic necessities for a month. Richmond shutout Rhode Island on Homecoming Weekend, 39-0. The win moved the Spiders record to 6-3 overall, and 4-2 in conference play.
The Richmond men's soccer program played its final game on Friday, as it was announced earlier this year that it would be cut, along with men's track and field, in favor of adding a men's lacrosse program. The team played to 3-3 tie with nationally-ranked VCU. Senior goalkeeper Chris Grover led the way for the Spiders with 11 saves, while Nick Butler, Oliver Murphy and Mannaan Umar scored a goal each.
Despite a fourth-quarter comeback by James Madison, Richmond was able to hold on for the win, 35-29, on Saturday in front of a sold-out Robins Stadium. The upset of the second-ranked Dukes serves as Danny Rocco's signature win in his first season as Spiders head coach. The star of the game for UR was sophomore quarterback Michael Strauss, who threw for 4 touchdowns in his first collegiate start. He'll start the rest of the season because incumbent starter John Laub suffered a broken ankle.
