This is my last Opinions column as a member of The Collegian staff. I wanted to make it memorable for our readers, so, as I do most Wednesdays, I sat down yesterday to think of something new and groundbreaking to be mad about. And, as happens most Wednesdays, I couldn't think of anything.

This Wednesday I stumbled upon an article in Richmond's Style Weekly magazine covering the Feb. 8 convention of the Libertarian Party of Virginia. According to the article's author Tom Nash, this convention was the biggest and most important for Virginia Libertarians for quite some while. Given the recent relative success of the party's gubernatorial candidate Robert Sarvis (who made his mark by running a seemingly honest, intellectual campaign and winning 6.5 percent of the vote), Nash contends that the party hopes to maintain this momentum by having as many Libertarians as possible on the upcoming ballots.

With Thursday classes canceled and a projected up to 6 inches of snow, there are more than enough reasons for UR students to celebrate. The one dilemma left on everyone's minds: How to spend your day off and enjoy the largest snowfall of the year so far. Luckily, I'm here with some suggestions. Granted, this may not be the most realistic list of Valensnocalypse (Valentine's Day week plus snowpocalypse) activities, but it's certainly the most fun.

The University of Richmond has an incredibly beautiful campus. It's been said before, but we truly live in a college brochure. I never visited campus before orientation of my first year, and as I drove along the perfect lake, past the Commons (it's a building and a bridge!) and pulled up to the tiny castle Lora Robins, I couldn't believe how much it felt like stepping into the pages of the many UR magazines I had received the previous year. It felt like at any point I could run into the laughing, school-spirited, interracial groups of friends that the informational pamphlets had taught me would be carrying their schoolbooks or sitting on picnic tables around every turn. Almost three years later, I still feel proud and lucky to be here every time I walk into the perfect library, pristine gym or, more commonly, eat in any of the shiny, well-maintained "retail dining locations." In fact, campus is so numbingly polished that I didn't realize the huge missing factor until I found my favorite room on campus.

What are you doing this weekend? If your response is anything other than "going on an extended trip outside the Commonwealth," and especially if your plan is "umm... lodges?" then I have an excellent answer to that question. This Saturday, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., the Cultural Advisors Alternatives program is hosting a Winter Masquerade Ball in the International Center Commons. As is the case with all CA Alternatives, this event is sure to thrill and amaze students from across the spectrum. Just in case you need any added incentive to attend a party that involves masks, balloons and a DJ, I hope this list of reasons it will be the best will cinch the deal.

Let's be honest: Virginia doesn't have any stellar candidates for governor this year. But that doesn't mean you get a free pass to sit out this election. It's a common misconception that state-level elections, unlike presidential or Congressional races, aren't all that important. That's just not true.

Anyone who follows Richmond Confessions on Facebook knows that scrolling through those sad, funny and sometimes blatantly weird posts is the perfect way to procrastinate an evening away. It's fun to see who is always commenting, and to laugh it off when someone confesses to being the contributor of "almost every" post.

Who went to the Richmond Street Art Festival? Wasn't that so cool?

Sometimes it can be a little bit of a downer to return to school after a long, hot four months of working at that same summer job you've had since high school, traveling, name-dropping your fancy summer internship, spending time catching up with old friends and family, or whatever other activity you were engaged in that didn't involve homework or cafeteria food (sorry D-Hall, you're really tasty and DARN do you know how to make a panini, but you're still a cafeteria).

Academic stress doesn't bring out the best in any of us. Some retreat to the library for 24+ hours, subsisting off 8:15 bagels and red eyes (double shot, iced, with skim). Some plan ahead, only to spend the morning leading up to the exam or deadline freaking out that they didn't study hard enough, or forgot an essential detail.

As many people know, the anti-gay marriage laws DOMA (Defense of Marriage) and Proposition 8 have been up for review in the Supreme Court these past few days. Probably most of us wouldn't know about this if it weren't for the profile picture-changing phenomenon that has swept the country along with it (at least I'm assuming that it has swept the country- my Facebook friends are pretty localized on this coast).

So, friends, the time is almost upon us again. The one day every year when sundresses, lodges and cooked meat coexist (semi) peacefully. If you happen to live your life mainly within the "Richmond bubble," as so many of us do, Pig Roast might as well be a national holiday.

Before I begin, I want to put a disclaimer on this piece: as a straight woman, I have a very specific set of lived experiences that only qualify me to write with any kind of authority on some experiences of some other straight women. Within these bounds of heterosexuality et al., however, this piece is going to be half analysis, half sex advice, so there's a little bit for everybody! (Unless you are not at all interested in the sexual exploits of straight college kids, in which case I apologize and will try to make it up to you with a recipe or something next time).
