As the Spiders dribbled the ball out with the final seconds ticking off the game clock, the smile on University of Richmond women’s basketball guard Grace Townsend’s face said it all.
Coming off a disappointing closing minutes effort against the University at Buffalo Dec. 21, it seemed the University of Richmond men’s basketball team’s goal heading into its matchup against Lafayette College was to not let its lead slip away in the final minutes.
Following the team’s holiday break, the University of Richmond women’s basketball team picked up a close victory over The George Washington University Dec. 30, defeating the Revolutionaries 70-66.
They say home is where the heart is, and that has certainly rang true for the University of Richmond men’s basketball team, who just won its sixth-straight game at the Robins Center Dec. 21.

Men’s Basketball
If you had told someone the University of Richmond football team would still be playing in December after starting their season 2-3, they probably wouldn’t have believed you.
It’s not every day that you have 3-time NFL defensive player of the year Aaron Donald complimenting the way you play football.
It’s not even four weeks into the regular season, and the University of Richmond women’s basketball team is rolling.
There were times when things looked a little dicey for the Spiders in their 49-27 first- round FCS playoff victory against North Carolina Central University Nov. 25.
After two straight losses over Boston College and the University of Colorado Boulder, the Spiders got back in the win column in an all-out effort over the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Nov. 21, defeating the Runnin’ Rebels 82-65 and claiming third place in the Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach, Florida.
There were moments in the University of Richmond men’s basketball team game against the University of Colorado Boulder on Nov. 20 when it looked like the Spiders might take down the No. 18 ranked team in the country.
The University of Richmond football team is back in the FCS Playoffs.
Women’s Basketball
Former University of Richmond forward Nathan Cayo, ‘22, recently signed with the Memphis Hustle, making him the next Spider to play for the NBA’s G-League.
Another chapter has been written in the storied history of the Capital Cup, and this year it took until the very last play of the game to see whether the University of Richmond or the College of William & Mary would be hoisting the trophy Nov. 18.
