The search for a new head coach for the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team has ended. Stephy Samaras, a former University of Virginia defender and two-time All-American, will take over the program, which has now filled the opening left after the unexpected resignation in March of former women's lacrosse coach Sue Murphy. Samaras played for Virginia from 1997-2000 and reached the NCAA Championship game with the Cavaliers in 1998 and 1999.
Former University of Richmond defensive end Lawrence Sidbury Jr. has signed his first professional football contract with the Atlanta Falcons. Sidbury's deal, announced on Friday, is for four years, but financial terms were not disclosed.
The University of Richmond athletic department has granted football coach Mike London a contract extension through the 2014 season, an agreement athletics director Jim Miller said recognized London's success with athletes on the field and in the classroom. The extension tacks another two years onto London's original five-year deal.

Sophomore Nicol Traynor has earned a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 5,000-meter run, the fifth Spider all-time and the first distance runner in six years to represent Richmond at the meet. Andrew Benford, who was in contention for a spot in the 3,000 steeplechase, fell less than two seconds short of an invitation based on his season-best time.

Nicol Traynor will not automatically qualify for the NCAA national meet after a 12th place in the East Regional 5,000-meter run, but her school-record performance earlier this season could be enough to secure an at-large bid.
