Trustees unanimously approve strategic plan, solidifying school's 5-year goals

The University of Richmond's Board of Trustees have unanimously approved the proposed five-year strategic plan, clearing the way for administrators to immediately begin molding university policy and offering programs to reach the plan's five goals.

The trustees, who met Thursday and Friday at the Jepson Alumni Center primarily to deliberate the plan, passed it without alterations, said President Edward Ayers and his chief of staff, Lori Schuyler.

The plan -- dubbed "The Richmond Promise" -- was founded on five points, which included promises for increased diversity, access and affordability, engagement with the City of Richmond and unity among the separate schools. By carrying out these goals, the plan's final stated objective was to offer a "distinctive experience" to students.

The board's and faculty's endorsement -- while not required to adopt a university strategic plan -- came a year after administrators began drafting the plan's nascent points. It was the final barrier required for the plan to be implemented university wide and was a symbolic gesture of unity among key stakeholders in the university community.

Friday afternoon, Ayers and Schuyler expressed urgency about finding ways to achieve the goals, but stressed that the process would be transparent and unhurried.
