The University of Richmond’s men’s basketball team continues to the second round of the NCAA March Madness tournament after a 67-64 victory over the University of Iowa. Graduate student Jacob Gilyard led all scores with 24 points, including the final four points.

Every March, the country is consumed by an obsession with the basketball tournament we’ve come to know as March Madness. As someone who is mildly obsessed with basketball year round, I usually find the exponential increase in attention fun and refreshing. Over the past few years, however, I've began to notice a disturbing trend.

Last week, university community members cheered for the Spider basketball players and wished them luck as they loaded the bus and headed to the airport for Texas. The players put on their headphones, boarded their flight and were off to face Kansas the next night, leaving the Robins Center in their rear view. A select few Spider fans left their classes and University Forest Apartments behind and followed the team all the way to San Antonio.

Hollywood all-stars launched the annual (and often infamous) film awards season Jan. 16 with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Golden Globe Awards. The Golden Globes commences a season fraught with red-carpet fashion, tearful acceptance speeches, obvious winners and surprising upsets.

March Madness, oh what to say. Quite frankly, for myself and many other students on campus, it is the best month sports has to offer (honorable mention: World Cup soccer). This season I feel an even closer connection to this amazing month, because our University of Richmond Spiders were a No. 7 seed in the 65-team field.
