The Center for Civic Engagement and the Office of the Chaplaincy hosted University of Richmond's eighth annual poverty simulation on Oct. 7, attended by more than 50 student participants. During the simulation, students were required to role-play the lives of low-income families by securing food, shelter and other basic necessities for a month. The entire simulation lasted for approximately one hour.

For the past 25 years, Paul Porterfield, director of the Media Resource Center, has worked closely with Uliana Gabara, former dean of international education, in planning the University of Richmond's annual International Film Series. Since Gabara retired this spring, this fall's series will probably be the last in which she is heavily involved.

Freshman Maddie Wittich, a member of Richmond's women's cross country team, was 15 feet away from the second bomb when it detonated at the Boston Marathon last April. Wittich, along with her mother and two sisters, was waiting for her father to cross the finish line when chaos ensued, she said.
