Members hear calls for funding

Collegian Reporter

This week's Westhampton College Government Association meeting featured Provost Steve Allred, Chief academic officer at the university, who discussed his work on the Strategic Plan. There are two main principles to the plan: to increase opportunities to engage in cross-school courses and to collect comments on the CORE course. There is an open forum at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 in Keller Hall for feedback. The Strategic Plan can be found on its Web site at https://strategicplan.richmond.edu.

Lauren Jones, a representative of Student Voices Against Violence, asked WCGA members for funding to put toward educating students about issues including relationship abuse. The "Red Campaign" would cost $600 to launch and less money to keep it updated. There are already between 10 and 18 Virginia colleges that have launched the campaign successfully. Jones said the campaign helped people in negative relationships to recognize the red flags that the relationship was abusive. Posters illustrating these red flags would be displayed around campus. Jones said Student Voices Against Violence hoped to launch the campaign in October. The campaign would last for about a month.

Meg Cardell, WCGA treasurer, relayed a funding request from Parking Services. They spent $400 printing books to explain the rules of parking. The need for the books stemmed from students claiming they were aware of the information but parking illegally around campus anyway. This resulted in many parking tickets and then many complaints.

Elyse Kenealy represented Camp Kesem, a not-for-profit's week-long sleep-away camp for children with parents diagnosed with cancer. There are currently 30 active members. Kenealy said they were hoping to send three to a national conference in Indianapolis. This would allow the representative to have direct contact with other similar camps that have been running for longer times. Their networking opportunities would be improved and they would be provided with more ideas on how to run training sessions and keep up membership. The cost per person is $305, including airfare, lodging and meals for the entire convention.

Richmond College Student Government Association representative Suren Daryanani said the Richmond senate had been focusing on the Strategic Plan and an Environmental Resolution written by Russell Gong. The resolution will explain ways to prevent waste and keep the campus clean and would be voted on at their meeting.
