Miguel “Mickey” Quiñones, dean of the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business, will be stepping down at the end of this academic year, Provost Joan Saab announced in an email to students Nov. 14.
Quiñones started at the University of Richmond in July 2019. During his tenure as the business school’s dean, Quiñones oversaw the launch of programs like the Bench Top Innovations course and the Robins Endeavor living-learning community.
According to Saab, the university is preparing a “national search” for the next business school dean as soon as possible.
“I am grateful to Mickey for his leadership, collaboration, commitment, and contributions to the Robins School of Business, and for his dedication to our faculty, staff, and students,” Saab wrote in the email announcing Quiñones’s departure. “The Robins School has a strong foundation for continued success.”
Quiñones won’t be fully leaving UR. According to Saab, he will take a sabbatical before coming back to serve as a professor in the management department. It is unclear from the email how long the sabbatical will be or which semester Quiñones will return to teaching at the university.
Before coming to UR, Quiñones was the O. Paul Corley distinguished chair in organizational behavior and administration and the department chair of the Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business.
Ahead of his assumption of the UR role, Quiñones told the Collegian he hoped to bring a collaborative style to the business school and foster connections with students and the outside community.
Senior Robins School of Business student Craig Papajohn-Shaw said Quiñones helped foster the business school community, highlighting how he was strongly invested in the students' successes and a friendly face on campus.
I'm happy for all of his future endeavors he'll pursue, but the business school will definitely not be the same,” Papajohn-Shaw said. “I think he has just been a fantastic person in creating such an inclusive community at the business school.”
Under Quiñones, the business school launched the Spider Business Hub, a program dedicated to connecting real-world organizations in and outside of the Richmond area with university students. The program pairs these organizations with students who support social media content, event planning and other business-driven projects.
