Letter: in defense of males

Dear University of Richmond Campus,

The image of a male on the University of Richmond campus has become increasingly negatively skewed. This is not to say that there have not been justified reasons for this tarnished image, but as representatives of true men with positive images, we want to say that all men are not alike and we do not stand for the behavior that is being praised, or even being cliched, as "boys being boys."

We want to know: When will these boys become men? When will these boys be held accountable for their words, behaviors, actions and even thoughts? Of course, this is a free country and the university has no right to strip away freedom of speech, but someone must speak up for what is right and just. As the real men of Richmond, we are not satisfied with lackadaisical progress and the Band-aids that are placed over the situations that constantly occur on and off our campus.

Whether the people who are tarnishing our collective image are solely individuals or part of some greater organization, it does not matter. A lack of tolerance and respect for different races, sexes, sexual orientations, religions, socio-economic statuses and many other facets of diversity continues to flourish on this campus. This article IS TARGETED at those individuals, and we are here to inform you that we will no longer stand quiet as you continuously destroy the Richmond male image.

A prestigious and diligent man once said, "The measure of a man is not where he stands at moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of conflict and controversy." (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) Sometimes it is hard to speak up for what is right for fear of judgment, but that spoken word is more powerful than any silent thought, so SPEAK UP! Richmond, we are here to prove that the image of a Richmond man can invoke positive images of just leadership and positive role modeling. There are good men, and we have decided that we will prove to this campus our existence and our success.
