Ayers says he's not a candidate for U.Va. president

President Edward Ayers denied that he was a candidate for the president of the University of Virginia, which is expected to name its new president this afternoon, according to university officials.

Ayers, whose name had surfaced as a possible successor to Virginia President John T. Casteen III, wrote in an e-mail to DailyProgress.com Sunday night: "As it turns out, it can't be me because I was not a candidate for the position. I'm very happy at the University of Richmond, where we're doing exciting things." Ayers later confirmed this in an e-mail to The Collegian.

Ayers was named the ninth president of the University of Richmond July 1, 2007, having previously served as dean of of Virginia's College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
