Richmond community members support Haiti with open forum

The Solidarity Action for Haiti Committee will sponsor an Open Mic Session for students, staff and faculty who have family and friends in Haiti or close ties to the country.

The Open Mic will take place in the Alice Haynes Room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, and serve as a public forum. Mary Ellen Stanley, Manuella Meyer and Kasongo M. Kapanga, professors of geography, history and modern literatures and cultures respectively, will present information concerning, among other things, U.S. relations with Haiti, Haitian history and the important ties between Haiti and Africa.

Caribbean music and a slideshow of Haiti will play in the Alice Haynes Room and Heilman Dining Center. The SAFH committee, which comprises students, faculty and staff, will also set up tables outside of both locations where students can donate money or meal swipes to C.A.R.E. and GRAMEEN, both of which are organizations working on long-term stability projects in Haiti. The committee also asks the University of Richmond community to wear red and blue on Wednesday, as they are both the university's colors and the national colors of Haiti.
