After a slow first half offensively, the Richmond Spiders were able to ramp up the intensity in the second half to defeat the South Alabama Jaguars 65-54.
Four Spiders scored in double digits this evening. Kendall Anthony led all scorers with 18 points. Nearing the end of the game, Anthony stepped into shots with confidence that edged the Spiders over the Jaguars.
Junior guard Terry Allen followed with 17 points all of which were in the second half. Sophomore guard ShawnDre’ Jones and forward T.J. Cline added 14 and 10 points respectively.
The Spiders shot 26.1 percent from three-point range this evening and 41.4 percent from the field. Transition baskets were the key to Richmond’s motionless offense.
Defensively the Spiders out-rebounded their opponents 39-38. Allen grabbed nine rebounds and Cline had eight. Alonzo Nelson-Ododa blocked three shots and pulled down seven boards.
The two lead changes of the game came at the end of the second half, but the Spiders were able to respond and hold the Jaguars from scoring. A three-pointer from Allen in front of the Richmond bench secured the momentum and victory.
Men’s basketball will travel to New York and play at Madison Square Garden Saturday Dec. 20 where they will face Pepperdine.
