Spider Sports Recap: Week of March 18

Women’s Swimming and Diving

March 22-23: NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship, Austin, Texas

Hannah Gouger became the seventh Spider in program history to qualify and compete at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. She finished 41st in the 100-yard backstroke competition and 42nd in the 200-yard backstroke out of 55 competitors. Gouger holds the school and Atlantic 10 Conference record for the 200-yard backstroke. 

Baseball

March 18: Win 4-1 vs. Princeton University

First-year Brian Schaub’s first career hit was a two-run home run in the fifth inning that gave the Spiders a 2-1 lead. Kyle Schmidt and Sage Bruhl each had an RBI in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 4-1. Layne Looney earned his third save of the season to give the Spiders the win.

March 20: Tie 6-6 vs. Monmouth University

Richmond led 5-2 going into the sixth inning before Monmouth scored four runs to take the lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Brian Schaub hit a game-tying home run to send the game to extra innings. Neither team scored again and the game ended because of darkness in a 6-6 tie after 13 innings.

March 22: Loss 2-8 vs. Marist College

The Spiders lost this game, the first in a three-game series. Sage Bruhl, Kyle Schmidt and Brian Schaub each had two hits.

March 23: Loss 1-11 vs. Marist College

Sage Bruhl had two hits again, but Richmond lost its second consecutive game to the Marist Red Foxes.

March 24: Loss 5-10 vs. Marist College

Marist led 6-5 going into the ninth inning and extended its lead to 10-5 with two home runs off Richmond pitcher Layne Looney. Spiders infielder Daniel Little had three hits, including his first home run of the season. After the Red Foxes swept the Spiders, the Spiders' season record is 11-8-1.

Women’s Lacrosse

March 22: Loss 8-9 at George Mason University

George Mason led 8-3 with 21:30 remaining, but the Spiders forced the game into overtime with five unanswered goals. George Mason scored the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the overtime period. Mia Castagnero was Richmond’s leading scorer with three goals and one assist.

March 24: Win 19-3 vs. St. Bonaventure University

The Spiders routed St. Bonaventure, led by Marissa Brown’s five goals and three assists and Katie Sciandra’s five goals and two assists. Richmond led 14-0 at halftime and extended its lead to 16-0 before allowing a goal to the Bonnies. The team’s season record is now 8-3.

Men’s Lacrosse

March 23: Win 16-9 at Bellarmine University 

Ryan Lanchbury scored four goals and made two assists. Lanchbury leads the team with 30 goals this season, closing in on Richmond’s single-season record of 34 goals that Teddy Hatfield set last season. Hatfield had three goals and three assists in the Bellarmine game, and Mitch Savoca scored four goals as well. Tate Gallagher contributed two goals and one assist. The Spiders' record now stands at 6-3 on the season, and 3-0 in Southern Conference play.

Women’s Track and Field

March 22-23: VCU Rams Invitational at Virginia Commonwealth University

Maria Acosta won the 400-meter hurdle competition with a time of 62.04, the second-fastest time in school history. The performance qualified her for the ECAC Outdoor Championships. Amanda Corbosiero won the 800-meter event with a time of 2:12.90. This  was the team's first for the outdoor season.

Women’s Tennis

March 23: Win 4-3 vs. George Washington University

The Spiders were trailing 3-2 before Dessi Zlateva and Lea Owens' singles-match victories gave Richmond the win. Ana Ramirez won her singles match as well. The team won two of its three doubles matches, and three of its six singles matches.

March 24: Win 4-1 vs. Georgetown University

Richmond won all three doubles matches and three of four completed singles matches to give it the 4-1 victory over Georgetown. Kiana Marshall, Ana Ramirez and Lea Owens each won their singles matches. The Spiders' record improved to 7-6 with the victory.

Men’s Tennis

March 23: Win 4-3 vs. Davidson College

The team won two of its three doubles matches and three of its six singles matches to earn a 4-3 win over Davidson. Campbell Erwin’s comeback win in his singles match clinched the Spiders' victory, improving the team's season record to 10-4.

Women's Golf

March 24-25: The Babs Steffens Invitational, Daytona Beach, Florida

The Spiders are currently in fifth place out of the 12 teams competing in the tournament. Richmond is +43, trailing leader Lamar University by 15 strokes. The tournament will conclude on Monday, March 25.
