Spider Sports Recap | Week of Jan. 16

Women's Tennis

Jan. 16: Loss 6-1 vs. University of Pennsylvania

The Spiders traveled to Pennsylvania to take on the Quakers. Senior Andrea Campodonico won her singles match. In the doubles, junior Carly Cohen and junior Leonor Oliveira lost 6-1. Campodonico and senior Marta Buendia fell short in their doubles match 6-3. 

Jan. 20: Loss 7-0 vs. University of Virginia

The Spiders traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia to take on no. 9 UVA. In the doubles play, Oliveira and Cohen lost 6-1, and first-year Lara Bakhaya and first-year Elizabeth Novak lost 6-1. In the singles play, Buendia won the second set but fell 6-1. The Spiders fell to 0-3 on the season after the match. 

Jan. 22: Loss 5-2 vs. Wake Forest University

The Spiders took on Wake Forest University on Jan. 22. In the singles play, Bakhaya and redshirt sophomore Claire Le Du won their matches against Wake Forest. However, the Spiders dropped to 0-4 on the season. The Spiders compete against James Madison University on Jan. 29. 

Men’s Basketball

Jan. 17: Win 64-57 vs. University of Rhode Island

The Spiders took on URI at the Robins Center. Senior forward Tyler Burton kicked off the game with the first seven points, ultimately leading him to a game-high of 23 points. Senior center Neal Quinn added 14 points for the Spiders. UR scored 40 points in the paint. 

Jan. 20: Loss 74-62 vs. Virginia Commonwealth University

The Spiders hosted VCU in the Robins Center for the Richmond Area Honda Dealers Capital City Classic. The Spiders went nine-and-a-half minutes without scoring in the second half. VCU pulled away for a 74-62 win. Burton led Richmond with 14 points, moving him into the top 25 on the school's career scoring list. Graduate forward Matt Grace added 13 points for the Spiders. The Spiders had 16 turnovers, and the Rams out-rebounded the Spiders 37-27. UR only scored 22 points in the paint. UR will travel to Massachusetts to take on the University of Massachusetts on Jan. 25.

Women's Basketball 

Jan. 18: Loss 75-49 vs. University of Rhode Island

The Spiders traveled to Rhode Island to take on Atlantic 10 leader, URI. The Spiders shot 17 of 59 (28.8%) from the field. First-year forward Maggie Doogan had a double-double and a team-high of 13 points for the Spiders. The Spiders added 38 rebounds, eight assists, and four steals throughout the game. The Spiders fell to 11-6 on the season.

Jan. 21: Win 74-58 vs. George Mason University

The Spiders took on Atlantic 10 competitor GMU in the Robins Center on Jan. 21. The Spiders improved their record to 12-6 with the win. Doogan had another double-double and her first career start. She scored a career-high of 18 points and had 12 rebounds and three blocks. The Spiders shot 51% from the field, had 45 rebounds and had 13 assists. The Spiders will travel to take on Fordham University on Jan. 25. 

Men's Tennis

Jan. 20: Loss 6-1 vs. Virginia Commonwealth University 

The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost 6-1 against defending A-10 champion VCU. First-year Mark Taranav got the only win for the Spiders in his single match. In the doubles play, graduate William Karpinski and junior Daniel Kliebhan lost to VCU 6-4. The Spiders fell to 0-2 for the season. The Spiders continue on the road taking on Army in Westpoint on Feb. 4.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Jan. 23: Loss 176-121

The University of Richmond women’s swimming and diving team lost to Fordham University in The Bronx, New York 176-121 in the tri-Meet. Senior swimmer Lauren Medlin won her individual races as well as the 400 freestyle relay. Medlin had the fastest time in the Atlantic 10 for the week. Senior swimmer Caitlyn Hughes won the 200 freestyle and was in the 400 free relay. The Spiders travel to Annapolis, Maryland to take on Navy on Jan. 27.
