Spider Sports Recap | Week of Jan. 23

Women’s Basketball 

Jan. 25: Loss 68-59 vs. Fordham University

After a 15-point win against George Mason University at home, the Spiders were unable to get the job done on the road against Fordham. The Spiders led for the majority of the game, including at the end of the first, second and third quarters. UR was down in the fourth quarter but cut the deficit to one point with 2:24 left to play in regulation, but the Rams surged ahead in the final minutes to win by nine points. Four players finished in double-figures. Sophomore guard Katie Hill put up a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. 

Jan. 29: Win 94-90 vs. Saint Joseph’s University

After a loss at Fordham, the Spiders won on their home court against Saint Joseph’s. In the third quarter, the Spiders led by 10 points, but the Hawks fought back and forced overtime. Junior guard Grace Townsend went 6 for 6 from the free-throw line to close out the overtime period. First-year forward Maggie Doogan scored a career-high 28 points and the win brought the Spiders’ record to 13-7 on the season. The Spiders play next at the University of Massachusetts at 7 p.m. Feb. 1.

Men’s Basketball 

Jan. 25: Loss 85-76 vs. University of Massachusetts

Coming off a loss in the Capital City Classic against Virginia Commonwealth University, the Spiders took on the UMass Minutemen. After beginning the game down 8-1, the Spiders fought back and led UMass by five, 37-32, at halftime. With just over three minutes to play in the second half, the Spiders had a three-point lead, but the Minutemen scored nine straight points and escaped with the victory. Senior forward Tyler Burton had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Senior center Neal Quinn chipped in 19 points.  

Jan. 28: Loss 86-60 vs. University of Dayton 

In the second game of their two-game stretch on the road, the Spiders lost their third straight as Dayton sailed past UR. With 10:31 to go in the first half, the Spiders led by one, 12-11, but Dayton went on a 32-11 run to close out the half. At several points in the second half, the Flyers extended their lead to 35 points as the Spiders never caught up. This brought UR’s record to .500 on the season, 11-11. The Spiders play next at the Robins Center against St. Bonaventure University at 7 p.m. Feb. 1. 

Women’s Track and Field

Jan. 27 & 28: Patriot Games at GMU 

The women’s track and field team saw several first place finishes in a number of events over the course of the two-day Patriot Games event. In the distance medley relay, the Spiders sent out two groups who finished in first and second place, respectively. Sophomores Laurel Kurtz, Lindsay Colflesh, Dylan Miller and Virginia Beringer made up the first group and finished with a time of 12:18.48. Sophomore Aylin Bruce, first-years Caroline Donohoe and Allison Colflesh and senior Maddie Orr made up the second group and finished with a time of 12:25.46. In addition to the distance medley relay, Lindsay Colflesh finished first in the 800m. In the 5k, Elizabeth Stockman finished 26 seconds before everyone else to capture first place and Anna George had a personal best with her fifth place finish. In the 60H finals, senior Kamryn Ross finished first with a time of 8.83. Ross also finished in first place in the 200m. The team will head to New York to face Rutgers University, among other schools, from Feb. 3-4 for the Scarlet Knights open. 

Swimming and Diving 

Jan. 27: Loss 152-113 vs. The United States Naval Academy

The UR women’s swimming and diving team lost to Navy in Maryland’s state capital, Annapolis, 152-113. In the 50 freestyle, the Spiders were successful as UR had the top-two finishers. Senior swimmer Lauren Medlin and sophomore swimmer Abby Fuller got first and second place, respectively. Fuller, Medlin and first-years Julia Krichev and Caitlyn Hughes placed first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.23. First-year Sally Harrington, UR’s only diver on the day, garnered personal bests in the 1m and 3m, respectively. UR’s next meet is in Charlottesville for the UVA First Chance Meet.

Women’s Tennis 

Jan. 29: Loss 6-1 vs. James Madison University

The Spiders’ efforts were unsuccessful as women’s tennis competed against JMU in Harrisonburg. In singles play, junior Carly Cohen won her match after winning both sets. Junior Leonor Oliveira, senior Andrea Campodonico and first-year Elizabeth Novak’s singles matches all went to three sets, but all three players lost their respective matches. In doubles play, none of UR’s pairings won their matches. This was the Spiders’ fifth straight loss to start the season. UR’s next match is against Radford University in Blacksburg at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3.
