The University of Richmond women’s soccer team defeated St. Bonaventure University with a score of 2-1 on Sunday, Oct. 26.

This was the final game for the Spiders and followed their tie against St. Joseph’s University on Oct. 23 in Philadelphia. It was the first win for Richmond since their victory over Wofford College on Aug. 24.

The Spiders started the game with possession of the ball, and after several attempts, first-year forward Emma Newman scored the first goal in the 17th minute, assisted by first-year defender Morgane Zinn.

Afterwards, Richmond received several fouls, giving St. Bonaventure a clear shot about 23 minutes into the first half, however sophomore goalkeeper Veronica Rrapi successfully blocked it.

The Spiders proceeded to outplay the Bonnies for the remainder of the half, outshooting them 14-3. However, St. Bonaventure gained some momentum in the last five minutes of the half; however, Richmond staved it off in the last minutes.

After returning, the Spiders continued their dominance, getting six attempts at corner kicks in the second half.

Less than a minute after their fifth corner attempt, Zinn scored the second goal of the game for the Spiders, assisted by junior forward Sydney Bortz and senior forward Anna Garcia.

After some substitutions, the Bonnies picked up steam and forced Richmond into conceding a penalty shot, which barely missed.

The teams traded the ball back and forth for the next few minutes, but in the last five minutes of the game, the Bonnies scored their first goal of the game in another penalty kick.

St. Bonaventure kept up this pressure for the remainder of the game and in the last seconds of the match, made it deep into the Spiders’ territory, only stopping when the clock ran out.

Richmond won the game with a score of 2-1, bringing their final record to 4-7-7 and increasing their victories against their longtime rivals, the Bonnies, to 13-7-2.

“We started the game really well and had plenty of opportunities in the opening 25 minutes,” UR Head Coach Adam Denton wrote in a postgame email. “It was disappointing to concede the goal late but I was really pleased with the effort overall players it was important to get a victory at home on our final day of the season.”
