On Nov. 11, 2009, Adnan Hajizadah, an alumnus of the University of Richmond, was given a two-year prison sentence in Baku, Azerbaijan. He was found guilty of hooliganism during a scuffle in which government-sanctioned elements had violently precipitated upon Hajizadah and his friend Emin Milli in a cafe with the clear intention to harm and intimidate opposition movements in Azerbaijan's capital of Baku.

University of Richmond dietitian Carolyn Powell collapsed in her 2-year-old son's bedroom on July 6 after a seizure stopped her heart. Her husband, Luke, woke up at midnight to the sound of their son Landon crying. Powell, a mother of two, was no longer in bed; Luke found her unconscious in Landon's room. Shortly thereafter, Powell was rushed to Richmond's Chippenham Hospital.

I have expressed disdain in the past for the lack of sports support from the student body and have had trouble understanding the lack of interest. Being at Duke Saturday night, I was excited to see hundreds of red-shirted students standing and cheering for the team and actually joining some of our vocal alumni leading cheers and encouraging others.
