In anticipation of Saturday's first on-campus home game, more than 500 students packed E. Claiborne Robins Stadium Wednesday evening for a pep rally. Coach Latrell Scott encouraged students to get up early Saturday morning and participate in the Spider Walk.

Walking to class at 7:30 a.m. can be a pretty solitary experience. It's often cold (especially this winter), and usually the only other humans we see are a few class-goers. Oh, and a lot of athletes, many of whom started their days between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., before the sun got up.

The University of Richmond football team has yet to lose a game this season, but if the Spiders want to secure at least a share of the Colonial Athletic Association title this week, they will need to beat No. 4 Villanova University on Saturday at UR Stadium.

Even though you've never been up at 5:30 a.m. for football practice, lifting weights, running, stretching, being yelled at, yelling back - during the summer (when many of you were on a beach, in Europe, traveling or just preparing to come/come back to this most beautiful campus), YOU can truly MAKE A DIFFERENCE if you come this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. (NOT 3:30 p.m.) to the grand ole lady, UR Stadium.

I have expressed disdain in the past for the lack of sports support from the student body and have had trouble understanding the lack of interest. Being at Duke Saturday night, I was excited to see hundreds of red-shirted students standing and cheering for the team and actually joining some of our vocal alumni leading cheers and encouraging others. It was Chattanooga all over again.

In the past, Richmond students have been criticized in the Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Collegian for poor turnout at athletic events. But the trend of lackluster fan support may be changing.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- After it became clear the University of Richmond would win its first national championship over the Montana Grizzlies 24-7, players doused coach Mike London in water, then charged the field to congratulate Montana and begin celebrating.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- University of Richmond fans traveled from near and far to witness their team win its first National Championship, while others watched from places as diverse as New York City, Washington, D.C., Ecuador and Singapore. Throughout the game, the Spider fans maintained their energy and support in the most overwhelming display of school spirit in years.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Spider football team decisively beat the University of Montana Grizzlies 24-7 Friday night at Finley Stadium to give the University of Richmond its first national title in any sport in the school's 178-year history.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Two hours before kick-off of the National Championship game Friday, Dec. 19, University of Richmond football fans lined Finley Stadium's entryway for the last Spider Walk of the season. Students, alumni and parents, some with their faces painted, others carrying signs, cheered as the football team made its way into the stadium.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The University of Richmond football team arrived Tuesday night here to begin preparing for Friday night's national championship. Richmond practiced Wednesday afternoon at Finley Stadium after a media meeting. Richmond held a press conference at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, then lightly practiced at 4 p.m. Kickoff is 8:05 p.m. Friday.

Sophomore Kevin Anderson scored 15 of his team-leading 17 points during the first half to propel the University of Richmond men's basketball team to a season-opening 81-57 victory over Randolph-Macon College.
