January 2011. Alex Wu rubbed his hands together in the winter air as he walked into a cheer gym, warming up for an intense night of tumbling. As he rushed up the steps to the gym, pumped with adrenaline, he had no idea that he would injure his ankle that night. A year later Wu, a Virginia Commonwealth University cheerleader, USA All-Star cheerleader and coach at Platinum Cheer Stars in Petersburg, Va., still hasn't recovered.

Allie Ware has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and endured African summer heat, but these weren't her most influential memories of her trip to Tanzania. Instead, this sophomore lacrosse player recalls small children surrounding her at the foot of the mountain, begging her for water with its Swahili translation: maji. Ware is now promoting the company she helped found this year with that name, and a mission to bring water to Africans who need it.

Last weekend's annual Ring Dance was held at the Jefferson Hotel to honor the Westhampton Class of 2013. Ticket sales for this year's event were reportedly down from previous years. It is tradition for the junior women to wear white dresses and be escorted down the front staircase by their fathers and non-junior women who attend are expected to wear black.

Everyone in the world is connected by the desire to be happy. There are thousands of articles out there on how to achieve and preserve happiness, yet people are still seeking desperately that coveted secret to contentment. I talked about this in an article that I wrote last year. Unfortunately, I still don't have the answer. I have, however, compiled a list of five simple things that seem to consistently bring people joy, no matter who they are.

The Annual Fund, which directly benefits Richmond students, continues to grow despite the recession. Alumni donated more than $5.5 million to the university in 2011, according to annual fund statistics collected by the Office of Annual Giving. This number has increased from $5.1 million from 2009-2010.
