Students at the University of Richmond have adapted academically, socially and emotionally to a strange and volatile fall semester. Policies formed to stop the spread of COVID-19 have had the necessary impact of making students more isolated and have removed typical avenues via which students find friendship and connection.

The Multicultural Student Space, located in Whitehurst, is a space for multicultural students to gather, connect and call their own, Associate Director of Multicultural Affairs Morgan Russell said. However, the Space has been closed this semester because of the COVID-19 pandemic. If the Space were open, student coordinators would have to work around COVID-19 restrictions, such as not being able to move furniture or have events.

Two University of Richmond geography professors have had to adjust their three-year project studying environmental changes in the Amazon to a virtual format amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The project is funded by a $700,000 NASA grant and is currently in its second year.

This summer, many University of Richmond students became part of a nationwide movement to abolish Greek life on college campuses. Dozens of members of Interfraternity Council fraternities and Panhellenic Council sororities disaffiliated from their organizations following the rise of an Abolish Richmond Greek Life movement, which began in the beginning of July with the inception of an Instagram account of the same name.

University of Richmond political science professor Jennifer Bowie engages students inside and outside of the classroom with court simulations, discussion-based classes and trips to the Supreme Court. Her teaching style won Bowie the Law and Courts Teaching and Mentorship Award from the American Political Science Association in July, a national award that recognizes innovative teaching in the subject matter of law and courts and is presented annually, according to the Law and Courts website.

A new map created by UR’s Digital Scholarship Lab continues their work on redlining in Mapping Inequality and shows that historically redlined neighborhoods have higher rates of chronic diseases that are risk factors for contracting COVID-19.
