The resiliency of a basketball team can be tested many ways. A key player can get injured or be in foul trouble, a bad call by the referees can give the other team momentum or, as in the case that the University of Richmond found itself in Wednesday night, the opposing team can get offensive rebound after offensive rebound. The mark of a truly good team is its ability to find a way to overcome those incidents and still find a way to win.

Brittani Shells hung her head as University of Dayton guard Patrice Lalor made two free throws to give the Flyers a 60-53 lead over the University of Richmond women's basketball team. With less than two minutes to play, Shells missed a six-foot shot that would have cut Dayton's lead from five points to three points. Dayton went on to extend its lead in the final minute, handing the Spiders their first Atlantic 10 Conference loss, 66-55, Saturday night at the Robins Center.

For Richmond coach Chris Mooney's tenure at Richmond, which is now in its sixth season, it has been a story of patience for him. He came to Richmond in 2005 and was 37-54 through his first three seasons before his patience in his Princeton-based system paid off with back-to-back 20-win seasons the past two years and a trip to the NCAA Tournament last year. The University of Richmond men's basketball team had not beaten Atlantic Coast Conference foe Wake Forest University since Jan. 15, 1990. The Spiders had not scored 90 points or more since defeating Virginia Military Institute Nov. 16, 2009, when they won 103-59. The Spiders accomplished two more statistical feats as the team cruised to its fourth win in five games over a Bowl Championship Series conference school, winning 90-74 at home on Wednesday night.
