Let me begin this review by saying something about my restaurant reviewing and grading criteria. I try to review places that might be especially appealing for University of Richmond students. Dining off campus is particularly popular among Richmond students because we go to a small university with only a few on-campus dining options.

As a self-proclaimed food enthusiast and someone who enjoys nearly every cuisine, I found deLux to be a good spot for contemporary American dining. Owned by the same people as The Hardshell and located in Richmond's historic fan district, deLux caters to a younger crowd than its brother restaurant in Shockoe Bottom. It's open from 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends, and has a menu that includes something for everyone.

Last weekend I went downtown with a group of friends with the intention of going clubbing. Because of a plethora of club rules, we didn't get into any of the clubs we visited, and the night was a bust. I understand why such rules must be implemented in clubs; after all, loud music, scantily dressed women and drunken men can be a lethal combination. But, on this particular night, the alleged "rules" were not applied to everyone. Last weekend, I was a witness to racial profiling during my first (and last) experience at Tiki Bob's Cantina down in Shockoe Bottom.

After you sidle past the security guards checking IDs, you'll be greeted by an ever-cheery hostess and a cacophony of silverware clinking, people chatting and laughing, drinks blending and arcade games chiming at the new Dave and Buster's restaurant in Richmond.

Havana 59 takes classic Cuban, Caribbean and Spanish flavors, full of cilantro, coconut and lots of garlic, to the max and applies the ingredients in innovative ways. The decor is rustic and felt like a Cuban nightclub in the '50s during dinner. There were lightbulbs strung around and the walls seemed to be on the verge of crumbling down.

Magnolia's, a new wine bar and bistro opening soon in the Village Shopping Center, will provide an atmosphere for people to learn about wine while enjoying good, simple food.

The City of Richmond has hundreds of restaurants, but located at 421 E. Franklin St. is the second-longest-running establishment downtown. Penny Lane Pub is 35 years old and provides an escape from a southern city to a bustling pub in Liverpool, England.

If you were to take the convenience of a Panera Bread and mix it with the gourmet elegance of a European bistro, then add a dash of the Richmond prep-factor found at Mosaic's, you would probably have a restaurant that looked and smelled a lot like the recently-opened Cafe Caturra.

Wild Willie's, a new restaurant established by a University of Richmond alumna, has already attracted many diners since its opening in March.
