Baseball team crushed by VCU in first game of series

The first game of the University of Richmond's baseball team's three-game series against Atlantic 10 rival VCU did not go as hoped, to say the least. The Spiders were shut down in a 19-4 loss that saw the Rams assert their dominance on the game right from its start. VCU peppered Richmond's pitching for 22 hits with two home runs, and struck out only three times.

Offensive awakening helps baseball win first series

The University of Richmond baseball team broke out of a seven-game slump over the weekend with a 2-1 series win over Fairfield University, thanks to the awakening of a stagnant offense. After starting the season 0-7, the Spiders stopped their skid with a lopsided 13-2 triumph over the Stags in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The University of Richmond baseball team started the season with a 0-6 record, which frustrated players and coaches alike. After losing all three games in the University of North Florida Best Bet Classic in Florida, the Spiders returned home with hopes of benefiting from home-field advantage.

The University of Richmond baseball team shut out Fairfield University, 0-8, Sunday afternoon to win the weekend series. Though the bats were quiet for much of the game, two big-scoring innings and strong pitching from Zak Sterling, junior starter, and Ryan Cook, junior reliever, brought the Spiders to a victory over the Stags. Sterling pitched six scoreless innings, allowed five hits and one walk and struck out four batters, which earned the win for Richmond.

The University of Richmond baseball team broke its seven-game losing streak Saturday morning with a long-awaited offensive awakening, and won 13-2 over Fairfield University. The Richmond offense, which had averaged 5.7 hits and 2.7 runs per game over its first seven games, tallied 15 hits during the first game of the weekend series against Fairfield. Five Spiders had multi-hit games.

Rapid Recap: Baseball drops first game of double header

The baseball team lost to Seton Hall University, 16-2, in the first game of a double header on Sunday. The Pirates again struck early, as they did in their win over the Spiders on Saturday, and scored six runs in the first two innings. Senior pitcher Dylan Stoops took the loss for Richmond, pitching a total of three and one-third innings and allowing eight runs - only two of which were earned - on five hits and two walks. Senior Andrew Blum relieved Stoops and allowed four runs of his own.

Baseball team heading into new season with new coach

When senior catcher JB Gadd heard the news that Tracy Woodson had been hired as University of Richmond's new head baseball coach, he was thrilled at the prospect of being able to learn from a former Major League Baseball player. Almost seven months later, with a fall full of major league-caliber coaching behind them, Gadd and his teammates are looking forward to seeing how the newly configured team performs competitively as the Spiders prepare to kick off their 2014 season, he said. In June 2013, former head coach Mark McQueen resigned after 19 years with the Richmond baseball program.

Richmond hires Tracy Woodson as new baseball coach

University of Richmond are expected to announce the hiring of new head baseball coach Tracy Woodson, according to multiple sources. Woodson, who is originally from Richmond, has been the head baseball coach at Valparisio since the 2007 season. Woodson will replace Mark McQueen, who resigned on June 20th.

Baseball team celebrates win, shaves heads for cancer research

After salvaging the series by winning the last of three games against St. Joseph's University, the University of Richmond baseball players and coaches gathered near home plate to have their heads shaved in support of children's cancer research. Feelings of consternation showed on the faces of some of the players who were more emotionally attached to their hair, but the team was happy to support the cause, junior second baseman Adam Forrer said. "We've been pushing to get donations," Forrer said.

Spider baseball completes season's second sweep

The Spiders baseball team extended its winning streak to four games and completed its second sweep of the season against the Wagner Seahawks with solid pitching and strong offense last weekend. Sophomore Jon de Marte pitched the first game of the series Friday, which the team won 8-6, and allowed three runs through five innings. The second and third innings were tough for de Marte, he said, especially the third when he walked three hitters in a row.

Baseball team defies expectations in opener, sweeps the series

For a team that was supposed to be weakened by its lack of experience and offense, the Spider baseball team defied all preseason expectations in its opening series against Bucknell University. In the first game of the season, the rookies showed their merit in beating the Bucknell Bison 10-4, with solid performances from freshmen Tanner Stanley, Jansen Fraser and Aaron Newman and redshirt freshman Jon de Marte. Stanley and Newman both went 1-for-4, but their hits were their first collegiate home runs, accounting for three of the Spiders' 10 runs of the day.
