Family Weekend planning affected by holidays

Students will not be able to bring their parents and siblings to a University of Richmond home football game this coming Family Weekend because of conflicts between the university's and the football conference's schedules. Officials at the university's Office of Parent Programs schedule Family Weekend two to three years in advance, wrote Lisa Van Riper, assistant vice president for communications, in an e-mail.

Ward leads Richmond past VMI

The University of Richmond football team survived a scare from the Virginia Military Institute Keydets on Saturday at UR Stadium, defeating VMI 38-28. Richmond senior quarterback Eric Ward threw for three touchdowns and a career-best 394 yards on 28 of 39 passing.

Athletes taking extra steps to avoid the spread of H1N1

Athletes are usually focused on game plans and matchups, but now they have to worry about illness, too. The team physicians and trainers in the Sports Medicine department have emphasized preventative measures to keep teams healthy this year. "We have not really changed what we have done [in the past]," said Chris Jones, director of Sports Medicine. The physicians and trainers meet with teams before the season to remind them of the proper hygiene practices that help stop the spread of infection, Jones said. "A lot of things are common sense, but not common practice," he said. Mike London, head football coach, said: "We hope to hammer the message home that you have to be very mindful about what you do so you do not open yourself up to those issues.

No. 1 Richmond defeats Hofstra 47-0

The first home game of the season was full of firsts for the University of Richmond football team, as it defeated Hofstra University 47-0 at UR Stadium on Saturday. Four Richmond players scored their first career touchdowns during the game, as Richmond extended its school-record winning streak to 12 games and improved to 3-0 this season. The Richmond defense forced four fumbles during the first half and the offense turned them into 24 points.

University of Richmond wide receiver Kevin Grayson blocked Delaware kicker Jon Striefsky's 23-yard field goal attempt with 38 seconds left during the fourth quarter to secure a 16-15 win for the Spiders. "I don't know what feeling went through my body when I felt it hit my hand," Grayson said.

Football's offensive line hungry for wins, pasta

During the past two seasons, the University of Richmond football team has won a National Championship and a Colonial Athletic Association conference championship, produced the two leading rushers and touchdown scorers in team history and set the team record for most rushing yards during a single game. Fifth-year seniors Matt McCracken, Mike Silva, Chris Kondorossy and Jared Decker, along with junior Drew Lachenmayer, have helped produce these record-breaking statistics and will try to improve their already impressive resumes on the offensive line this season. The line is led by McCracken, a three-time All-American left guard, who is also one of the team's captains this season.
