Sophomore battles arthritis, keeps figure skating

University of Richmond sophomore Amanda White always asked her parents to let her skate more, but in high school she had to convince her doctors, too. White started taking figure skating lessons when she was 8, after watching Tara Lipinski win the gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

Club sports to hold first-ever rush day in Forum

"The best kept secret on campus." That's how Kerry McClung, manager of club sports at the University of Richmond, referred to club sports teams at the university. "But we're trying to change that so we won't be able to use that quote anymore," McClung said. McClung's dream will come closer to reality when club sports teams showcase themselves in the Forum at the first Club Sports Rush Day on Thursday, Sept.

Football's offensive line hungry for wins, pasta

During the past two seasons, the University of Richmond football team has won a National Championship and a Colonial Athletic Association conference championship, produced the two leading rushers and touchdown scorers in team history and set the team record for most rushing yards during a single game. Fifth-year seniors Matt McCracken, Mike Silva, Chris Kondorossy and Jared Decker, along with junior Drew Lachenmayer, have helped produce these record-breaking statistics and will try to improve their already impressive resumes on the offensive line this season. The line is led by McCracken, a three-time All-American left guard, who is also one of the team's captains this season.

-Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, who was drafted fifth overall during this year's NBA Draft, has agreed to a contract with a Spanish club team and will not play for the Minnesota Timberwolves this season.

The stakes have never been higher. With the football team coming off its first National Championship, University of Richmond students and fans from across the country are anxiously waiting to watch the Spiders make another run at the title.

Women's soccer to rely on youth after tough finish in '08

The University of Richmond women's soccer team is trying to regain its winning momentum after a disappointing finish to last year's season. The Spiders started the 2008 season 9-2-1, before losing seven of their last eight games. "We lost a lot of very good players to injury," said head coach Peter Albright.

First-year athletes fulfill requirements during preseason

About 40 incoming freshmen athletes took their library skills and alcohol education classes before the semester in an effort by class coordinators to make the first-year requirements more convenient for students and staff. Freshmen usually take Library Skills 100 and an alcohol class, URAware (Wellness 085), during the academic year.

University of Richmond head football coach Mike London said he was looking forward to increased fan support when his team starts its season on Saturday at Duke. "For us to have the support of the students at UR is tremendous," London said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Can Vick return to form?

In a two-year span, Michael Vick has gone from one of the fastest quarterbacks in the league, to an abuser of animals, and now holds a quarterback position with the Philadelphia Eagles. Vick signed a one-year deal with the Eagles with an option for a second year earlier this month.
