Two women's lacrosse players vying for World Cup

The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team has high expectations of capturing another Atlantic 10 championship this season, but two players have even loftier goals. In August, senior attacker and midfielder Mandy Friend and freshman attacker and midfielder Caitlin Fifield tried out in Boston for the Canadian Women's World Cup lacrosse team and have made it to the final 24 players.

Time for October baseball

The major league baseball playoffs started last night, and as good as this year's postseason teams are, there are a number of other talented teams whose playoff dreams ended because of the way playoff teams are determined. If you follow one of the teams that knew in August that it would be statistically impossible for it to still be playing in October, you may have lost interest in watching baseball during the last few weeks. It's especially difficult to maintain an interest in a losing team when you're relying on the University of Richmond cable channels, away from the regional networks that broadcast your team when you're at home. But don't worry, my friends, because as of last night, all remaining major league baseball games will be televised on campus channels for your viewing pleasure.

Two seniors recruiting students to play frisbee golf

By Jennifer Hoffman Collegian Reporter Trade in your golf clubs and balls for a flying disc, place a pole with a metal basket in each hole on the course and voila!, you get Frisbee golf, or "frolf," a sport played by millions of people around the world, according to the Freestyle Frisbee Association's Web site. Just ask University of Richmond seniors Jeff Russell and Logan Turner, who have been flinging Frisbees together twice a week since their freshman year. The goal of Frisbee golf, known as disc golf by professionals, is to hit the parabolic-shaped chains on the top half of a 3-foot pole with the disc so it drops into the basket.

Women's soccer team beats Xavier, improves to 1-1 in conference

Senior Jessie Wolfe scored two goals and had an assist for the University of Richmond women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at First Market Stadium, carrying the team to a 3-1 win against Xavier University. Freshman Kat Russell scored the first goal of her collegiate career and gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead during the 18th minute of play.

Richmond student-athletes excel in multiple varsity sports

Cass Meadows, a sophomore defender on the men's soccer team, has started five of the Spiders' six games this season and had been identified by his coach as an important part of the team's success at the Duquesne Invitational earlier this month. Last fall he competed for the varsity cross country team. "That just shows how talented a kid he is," soccer coach Jeff Gettler said.

Sophomore golfer leads team at both of its tournaments

By Taylor Engelson Collegian Reporter A student who did not compete in tournaments a year ago shot the lowest score in University of Richmond women's golf history at the Towson Women's Invitational in Maryland earlier this month. The Richmond women's golf team placed second and sophomore Christina Gray was the individual runner-up with a score of 69 -- a score she was shocked to hear about, she said. Gray didn't know how well she was doing until the 16th hole, she said.

Richmond beats Maine 44-17, gets No. 1 ranking

By Stephen Utz Collegian Reporter Richmond wide receiver Jordan Mitchell knew exactly how to beat Maine's defenders when they started playing 12 yards off him: one quick move to the sideline. That's all it took for him to get open for an 87-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Eric Ward, a play that tied for the second-longest scoring play in school history and was part of a 44-17 victory against the University of Maine Saturday at home. "It was a play we saw all week in practice," Mitchell, a junior, said of Maine's defensive coverage on the play. Ward completed 16 of 25 passes for three touchdowns and a career-high 273 yards while Mitchell earned a career high in reception yards and scored two touchdowns.

Men's soccer loses to Longwood

Despite taking an early 1-0 lead, the University of Richmond men's soccer team missed scoring chances at the end of regulation, leading to a 2-1 overtime loss against the Longwood Lancers at First Market Stadium on Wednesday. The deciding goal was scored during the 96th minute of play by Longwood freshman Kevin Chico from 25 yards away, his second goal of the season.

That's all it took for him to get open for an 87-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Eric Ward, a play that tied for the second-longest scoring play in school history and was part of a 44-17 Richmond victory against the University of Maine Saturday at home in front of more than 8,000 people. "It was a play we saw all week in practice," Mitchell, a redshirt junior, said of Maine's defensive coverage right before the reception, which led to the game's first touchdown. Mitchell earned a career-high 139 reception yards off four catches and scored two touchdowns.

Women's soccer team defeats U.Penn off penalty kick in 2nd OT

A double-overtime penalty kick goal from senior halfback Sarah Hilt lifted the University of Richmond women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Pennsylvania Quakers Friday night at First Market Stadium. The penalty kick was awarded midway through the second overtime period after a Quakers defender tackled Richmond junior midfielder Kelsey Rdzanek inside the goal box.

Offensive-minded play gets men's soccer its first win of the season

The University of Richmond men's soccer team earned its first win of the season Saturday during a game against Marshall University (2-6) as a part of the Duquesne Invitational, during which the Spiders also played Lafayette College (2-3-1). Last night's 1-0 loss to Virginia Commonwealth University brought the team's record to 1-5.
