In a matchup of left-handed starting pitchers, the baseball team was able to salvage the last game of the three-game series against the VCU Rams by a final score of 9-6. The Spiders began the game on an ominous note, allowing VCU's leadoff hitter to extend a single into a double following an error by Jansen Fraser, sophomore left fielder.
Despite a strong outing by starting pitcher Zak Sterling, the baseball team's errors and its sputtering offense cost it a loss to VCU for the second time in two days, conceding the series to its Atlantic 10 rival. Sterling, a junior, pitched well for six and two-thirds innings of the 1-5 loss, giving up only two earned runs on eight hits and no walks with three strikeouts. After allowing a run in the second inning on a triple and a single, Sterling settled in and retired 11 straight batters through the fifth inning. The Rams took advantage of mistakes made in the sixth inning to break open what had previously been an uneventful pitchers' duel.
The first game of the University of Richmond's baseball team's three-game series against Atlantic 10 rival VCU did not go as hoped, to say the least. The Spiders were shut down in a 19-4 loss that saw the Rams assert their dominance on the game right from its start. VCU peppered Richmond's pitching for 22 hits with two home runs, and struck out only three times.

Over the weekend of March 21, two of the three Richmond swimmers swept the awards for which each collegiate coach votes, including senior Katy Alexander who won the Mary Jo Ruggieri $500 scholarship, and senior Dana McLachlin who won the 2014 Collegiate Athlete of the Year award. The wait for a home victory is finally over: University of Richmond men's lacrosse beat Wagner College 14-7. The Spiders (2-7) beat Vermont 12-11 in Durham, N.C., but were 0-3 at Robins Stadium going into Friday night's game. Richmond head coach Dan Chemotti said getting a win at home wass something the team had been talking about. "To be able to get that win and put that behind us and focus on getting better as a team was important," he said. Despite committing an early penalty, Richmond opened the scoring when Brad Burnam found a wide-open Dan Ginestro on the crease for the easy finish. Unlike Wagner (2-5), Richmond capitalized on its initial man-up opportunity, and Mitch Goldberg added to his team-leading goals as the Spiders opened up a 3-0 lead fewer than six minutes in. Wagner cut the Spiders' lead to two, but Goldberg capped off Richmond's first-quarter scoring when he juked a defender and finished his shot in close. "Being able to have some success early certainly will allow our guys to play with confidence," Chemotti said.
