The definition of sports

What is considered a sport? That's the age-old question, isn't it? A few nights ago, my friends and I, being the philosophical types that we are, arrived at this basic yet puzzling question. We pondered this perplexity for a few moments, but in the end decided it is truly too hard to draw out a list that is absolute. I'm discussing this topic because of the looming NASCAR races at Richmond International Raceway this Friday and Saturday, which my friends and I are planning on attending (P.s., you don't say: "We're going to NASCAR." You say: "We're going to the race." That's the proper race lingo.) But really, who decides what is considered a sport anyway? The Oxford English Dictionary defines sport as: (n.) 1.

Cross country teams set pace to reach goals

Both the men's and women's University of Richmond's cross country teams were picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 this season in the preseason polls, but the coaches and runners are aiming for better. The men's coach, Steve Taylor, said the men wanted to win the conference championship this year and that the possibility of getting to the national championships was within grasp. The women's coach, Lori Taylor, said the women wanted to win their conference championships and place in the top five at the regional championships just to qualify for the national championships. As for the preseason predictions, senior Andrew Benford, one of the captains of the men's team, said the team did not take the predictions too seriously, but that it was good motivation to fire it up in training. Jenn Ennis, a fifth-year senior on the women's team, said the predictions were not something that bothered the team. "We are confident in how we're going to race this season and so, if anything, we're the underdogs," Ennis said. For both teams, it is about improving from last season.

Rick Ro$$ to blame for UNC's Lo$$ to LSU

I've seen athletes tear their ACLs to shreds, endure excruciating surgeries and then lie on a training room table as athletic trainers use heavy steel blades to forcibly break up scar tissue in the most sensitive parts of their knees.

Conference champions aim to reach season goals

After two weeks of preseason, the Richmond field hockey team, defending Atlantic 10 champion, is positioned to transfer their practice into gameday tenacity. "We've worked really hard this preseason, so we're looking to show other teams how hard we've worked," senior captain Michelle Weaver said. During the last practice before the season opener against American University, head coach Gina Lucido stood in the middle of Crenshaw Field shouting players' names to get them excited for the game. "Coach has been firing us up with nicknames to light the fire we've got from preseason," junior center back Emily Straniero said. Despite a 5-1 loss to No.

Misremembering: the downfall of Roger Clemens

I'd like to remember Roger Clemens' split-fingered fastballs, not the Feds fingerprinting him. I'd like to recall how he always seemed to make great pitches when he was behind in the count, not the one count of obstruction of Congress, two counts of perjury and three counts of making false statements that he now faces. "I never took HGH or Steroids.

Q&A with Dani Pycroft

Q: What's your fifth year like? A: It's a totally different dynamic mixing with older people in my grad classes, people who have kids, from like age 24, 25 ... to like 40. Q: Last year the team finished the season ranked 19th in the country.

Life skills learned from sports skills

So, there's this magical land, hidden deep in the forest, where you can play all day and try new activities that you probably cannot do in the "real world." Paddling a whitewater canoe down a Class III rapid, scrambling up a rock face, shooting arrows and cantering over jumps are normal occurrences.
