A statement on the Transgender Inclusive Student Initiative by the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council:

The Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council believe strongly in promoting diversity and inclusion, and we share Miranda’s goal that Richmond be a welcoming community for transgender students on campus. While our councils cannot dictate the membership policies of each individual fraternity or sorority, as they are private organizations with their own membership guidelines, we are committed to taking critical steps towards making the campus a more inclusive community. These include committing to asking members of the chapter executive boards to go through Safe Zone training; speaking up against transphobic comments or discriminatory behaviors of any kind from members; respecting chosen names and pronouns of all students; and our councils hosting an educational training on promoting diversity, cultural competence and inclusive excellence for our entire Greek community by Dr. Derek Greenfield. Our hope is that in taking these critical steps, we will continue building a community that respects students regardless of how they identify.
